Waterproof Vs. Water-Resistant Windows

Here in the great state of Mississippi we are very fortunate in that we do not have to suffer through freezing temperatures and snowy blizzards. We do however, get above average rainfall and of course, the occasional hurricane. Keeping that extra moisture out of our homes is something we trust our doors and windows to do, and when purchasing replacement windows, should consider strongly. Water inside a wooden home can cause all manner of nasty problems, with mold and rot topping the list.

Windows, even our American Made Windows, are water-resistant, not waterproof, so homeowners should pay special attention to window ratings. Most windows used in residential and commercial buildings are windows with moving parts that allow you to slide, raise or swing them open. So, unless you are installing “portholes” in your home, the very function and design of your windows means they cannot be fully sealed off from the elements and still operate. Your windows will have weather-stripping and seals, but again, these are water-resistant, not waterproof.

Resistance to water leakage is one of the performance standards we test for at American Made Windows to ensure that our windows meet or exceed national standard requirements. Water is sprayed on the outside of our windows as wind pressure is applied. This test best duplicates the effect of a hurricane where wind drives the rain at a window. It is not so much the volume of rain that is applied, but rather the amount of wind pressure the window can withstand without leaking. The design of our frames allows the water to drain back to the outside of the building, making American Made Windows some of the most water-resistant windows you can buy.
